Fulfilment 2030: quieter, smarter and almost invisible

The fulfilment industry has come a long way – from parcel delivery via stagecoach, to mail orders and finally ecommerce. And it’s still got some way to go, especially with the advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.

As a fulfilment company, we’ve been in business since the 1960s, so we thought we’d ask our experts about the future of fulfilment and which big trends to watch out for in the next four years.

The end of the diesel delivery van

This one is no surprise – especially considering the UK government ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030. Only EVs, HEVs and PHEVs will be sold, with a push to have all new vehicles 100% zero emission by 2035.

Delivery companies are already using electric delivery vehicles, though the focus is largely in cities and urbanised areas where there is more infrastructure to support charging. Royal Mail, for example, already has 7,000 electric vans in its fleet, as well as more than 100 new micro electric vehicles (MEVs) that will be making deliveries in London, Brighton, Bristol and Newcastle-under-Lyme.

By 2030, electric delivery vehicles will be the norm, which will make ‘greener’ delivery the standard – a checkout expectation for customers instead of a premium option.

With overnight charging depots replacing traditional fuelling hubs, we could also see more warehouses generating their own solar energy and catering for quick, seamless charging.

Airborne deliveries – bring on the drones

Again, packages being delivered by drones is nothing new. It’s been talked about for the last few years, with a few retailers running pilot programmes like Amazon, Walmart and DoorDash. In 2021, Royal Mail trialled drone delivery in remote locations, like the Shetland Islands.

More recently, Amazon became the first retailer in the UK to make this a reality with its launch in Darlington, County Durham. Parcels weighing less than 5 pounds will be delivered via drone within 7.5 miles of the retailers fulfilment centre.

By 2030 this will expand. Deliveries won’t be restricted by weight and instead of dropping parcels unceremoniously into gardens, drones will land and take off. The applications are also vast (and practical) – urgent medical deliveries, rural last-mile logistics, food deliveries and the anticipated 30-minute delivery for all goods, not just take-aways.

More drones also mean less traffic and fewer emissions, which all contributes to the idea of greener delivery.

The rise of the autonomous warehouse

With the advancement of AI and robotics, experts anticipate the rise of robot-centric facilities. Gartner has predicted that by 2030 half of new warehouses will be automated. The implication is that “Warehouse designs will increasingly prioritize flexibility, efficiency and adaptability to support automation-led, human-aided workflows”.

What this will actually look like is AI used to allocate stock dynamically, robots moving shelving, fewer fixed packing zones, dark warehouses operating with minimal light and predictive systems that can reposition inventory before orders arrive.

Humans will not disappear from this picture; instead, they will spend less time moving products and more time managing exceptions, overseeing autonomous systems and resolving the complex situations that AI still struggles to handle.

The future of delivery is shared

Courier consolidation is already being used by fulfilment operations to streamline deliveries, save money and guarantee a better customer experience. Instead of having multiple couriers collect parcels from their warehouses, a consolidation company collects all of them, transfers them to a nearby hub and distributes from there.

By 2030, this could be taken to the next level – especially with customer demand for a smoother experience rising. Customers are frustrated by multiple vans, fragmented tracking and missed deliveries. In the future, consolidation could look like this: a shared intelligent delivery network between retailers with AI co-ordinating consolidated neighbourhood drops and one courier handling multiple retailers simultaneously. No more separate retailer contracts, fulfilment streams, vans and routes, or packaging and tracking systems.

In practice, three parcels from three different retailers will be delivered by one courier at the same time, in the most efficient way possible.

Fulfilment that moves before customers click ‘buy’

It won’t be sci-fi anymore. As retailers experiment more with anticipatory logistics and innovate their approach, AI may be used to predict likely purchases, pre-position stock regionally and begin the fulfilment process before checkout completion.

In practice, this also means AI could optimise inventory minute-by-minute based on weather, events, trends and local demands, ensuring peak shopping times or promotions are dealt with smoothly, or even that 20-minute delivery is possible because a product was moved to a nearby hub in anticipation of the sale!

Sustainable fulfilment as the default option

As hinted in many of the above trends, by 2030, sustainability won’t be a nice-to-have option. Instead, it could become something consumers actively see, measure and choose at checkout.

We’re already seeing growing pressure on retailers and logistics providers to reduce emissions, minimise packaging waste and offer greener delivery options. Over the next four years, that could evolve into a far more transparent fulfilment ecosystem.

Customers may routinely see:

  • delivery emissions at checkout
  • sustainability scores tied to shipping options
  • incentives for consolidated or slower delivery slots
  • reusable or returnable packaging systems
  • AI-optimised packaging that reduces wasted space and materials

Packaging itself could become part of the logistics network rather than a disposable afterthought. Reusable ecommerce packaging loops, QR-tracked parcels and deposit-return systems may become increasingly common as retailers look to cut both waste and costs.

At the same time, delivery choices could become more personalised. Consumers may opt for ultra-fast premium delivery, lower-cost grouped neighbourhood deliveries or greenest available fulfilment options.

By 2030, retailers may compete not only on speed and convenience, but on how sustainably they can move products from warehouse to doorstep.

The future of fulfilment

By 2030, fulfilment may no longer feel like a separate part of the customer journey at all. Deliveries will become quieter, smarter, faster and more predictive, powered by automation that most consumers never even see.

The companies that succeed won’t simply move parcels efficiently. They’ll build fulfilment networks that are intelligent, sustainable and flexible enough to meet rising customer expectations in real time.

In many ways, the future of fulfilment is already taking shape. The next four years may simply accelerate it.
